I had tried to invite Ibrahim to see a movie at the SLC the day before on Tuesday. However the movie I thought might be a good fit was playing on Wednesday as well. So Ibrahim had time that evening to see The Grand Budapest Hotel by Wes Anderson at the SLC. Apparently, Ibrahim regularly meets with his previous conversation partners and tutors and since one of them had come to town to interview for a teaching position or a graduate fellowship he was unavailable that Tuesday.

So before the movie began, we were talking about our cars since I had just gotten my brakes fixed over the weekend and Ibrahim had found a buyer since he was selling his car. I believe this is his last session at CIES before returning to Turkey which is why he has already arranged for a sell. I knew from our first meeting that he needed power steering fluid or something of that nature so I typed the phrase he could use on my phone's notepad program so he could interpret it over the din of the gathering line for the theater. This was something I made good use of in the restaurant where we met before as well since he made quick use of translation on his phone if I could not demonstrate an example non verbally.

The movie we viewed made good use of symbolism and had little exposition. When I asked Ibrahim afterwards if he could follow the plot he did not admit to any problems. He did not have too much to say about the movie opinion wise just calling it "different," or "old." I think he meant old in the since of anachronism or pastiche which I tried to tie to the people we saw in french period dress at railroad square several weeks before.

  1. I am working with him as well the past few weeks. He did not mention the movie. I will have to ask him about it to see if there is any new vocabulary he can use to describe it. And you are correct, he is getting ready to head back home and is trying to really ramp up his learning - especially speaking and writing skills - in the next few weeks.
