This was the third tutoring session with Winnie. She did not have a partner to bring along but it did not seem to impair our activity. I began by asking her about the Gala she needed to cancel our last meeting to prep for. She showed me a video on her phone of the event that involved her dancing while a Columbian man who studied in China played the guitar and sang the lyrics to a Chinese song.

Since I had not tried the activity with Winnie before, I tried a variant of the 52 playing card questions with simpler questions more suited to her speaking level. Having read our textbook's chapter on it before, this identifies as primarily a speaking activity in the form of an interview. I like the activity because it is fun for me while helping the tutee with the multiple areas of listening, speaking, and composition.

I had promised myself to type the tutee's responses to my questions so I could ask the questions faster but the pacing was different this time. I did not feel rushed and neither did Winnie appear rushed as I wrote the responses and corrected forms in my sketchpad. At some point I will have to type the responses into a notecard document for printing the review activity. We covered many topics in the session and digressed into several areas.

The one topic that stands out was for descriptive questions which focus on expository composition. For a question like "Describe your clothes," she had a hard time finding the adjectives and adverbs to supplement the nouns for clothing. I suggested that we focus on that topic for building vocabulary in our next session. Winnie expressed that she enjoyed the card interviewing activity and would like to continue with that in the future.

  1. "Describe your clothes" gives me an idea for a vocabulary lesson using the Fall Fashion issue of Marie Claire magazine -- a good magazine for my female tutees. We'll both enjoy reading the issue together!
