Tutoring Session No. 12
Observation of Marissa
Mainwood
Marissa’s tutoring
session with Nina and Gabriela was once again really great. Marissa works
wonderfully with her tutees and utilizes strategies that we learned in class (i.e.,
slowing rate of speech, using visuals, etc.) to teach. For this session,
Marissa brought the game of Scattegories for everyone to play which I thought
was brilliant because Scattegories is a great way to practice building
vocabulary. In the game, the goal is to write down as many words that you can
think of with whatever letter of the alphabet that was rolled on the dice. She explained
the directions to the girls and altered the rules a little bit to accommodate
their needs. For example, instead of only having one minute Marissa gave them
two minutes to complete the task. Both of the girls were only able to write
down between four and six words for each letter but any category that they didn’t
understand Marissa told them what it was. After each round, Marissa had the
girls pull out two or three prepositions which they had to use to make
sentences. It was such a great activity and even though the girls only wrote
down a few words each, they were able to ask questions about each of the
categories and thus build more upon their vocabulary.
Marissa is a great tutor.
She pays attention to slowing her rate of speech, asks her tutees if they have
any questions they need answered, and makes sure that the students fully
understand the material. I greatly enjoyed both of her tutoring sessions.
