Management:
Ryan's class was
structured very well and before I knew it our hour was up. He had the agenda on
the side board and this particular thursday we were working on:
"Transcriptions, Paraphrasing and Summarizing". The first activity
was a dictation exercise where the students wrote down exactly what was being
said. This was done by the teacher's assistant and she spoke slowly and very
clearly so everyone could understand her. She repeated each line 3 or 4 times
so the students could write down each word. Repetition was very
important in this exercise.
Next we took a class
poll: "was this too much work or not?" An interesting moment in the
class because this was a good way to assess how well the class thought they
were doing individually and an opportunity for Ryan to be a little "cooler"
or more caring in his students eyes, but just asking the question.
After that, we watched a
video called "Truckers Knot" and the class got into pairs and
answered detailed questions, paraphrasing the video. Then still in pairs, they
wrote down a summary the video and turned it in, for feedback.
Ryan closed the class by
explaining again what paraphrase, summarize and transcribe were.
