Topic discussed: Backgrounds, culture
Cultural and/or linguistic topics you and your partner learned:After CIES classes let out I walked up and introduced myself to a snazzily dressed young man named Paterne. He is from the capitol city of the Ivory Coast or Cote d'Ivoire, Abidjan. I asked him if he liked Tallahassee and what he likes to do for fun around here he said Tallahassee was a good place and that he likes to eat American food, specifically hamburgers. He also likes American football and soccer. His favorite soccer team is one from his home country and they are commonly known as "Cote d'Ivoire". It was around this time that I had to have him explain that "Cote d'Ivoire" means Ivory Coast, something that I hadn't picked up on yet. He had a very interesting french accent and occasionally we needed each other to repeat some questions/answers for clarification. Paterne hasn't been in the country that long, only about 3 months and so he is a level 1 student, but I asked him if he had spoken English before, because he was very good at it, and he said he had some previous experience back home.
