Last Monday I tutored my child tutees Matthew and David.
This particular afternoon, I was exhausted between work and school and had no
patience for bad behavior. When they would ask me questions like “Can I go find
another book?” my response would be “yes you can but you will not receive any
candy since you won’t have time to finish your summary”. Also when they would
not follow the directions for their homework properly, I would tell them that
they could do it however they wanted but they will get it wrong if they didn’t
follow directions. This method was extremely effective. I did not have to tell
them what to do once. They simply did not want to jeopardized receiving a
reward (getting a correct answer or candy) so they would listen. We mainly
focused on reading comprehension and math word problems. Once I was able to
channel their focus towards the lesson, with the help of candy, we breezed
through all the material we needed to cover. By finally putting an end to their
mischief behavior we were able to effectively cover a lot more material than
before. It was extremely fulfilling to get them to behave this session.
