The session with Claire started a little later than normal, so accordingly she was a little more tired than normal. She told me about a reading project they had at her school where the kids could be on the local news if they read 25 books that semester or year. So when Claire was slowing down I tried to engage her desire for a little fame.
The book was about friends comparing the seasons, fighting, and making up. So we had some short talks about the seasons and weather to reinforce her interest. The book we read made heavy use of speaker quotes for it's reading level. I noticed in earlier readings that she didn't emphasize the shift in speakers when reading aloud so I made sure to tell her when and how to alter your voice to make it clear to the listener. However, this time she didn't seem to have much trouble at all in adjusting her voice for speakers or exclamation or question intonation. There was one portion she was confused by where the word "too" was used in bridging two dependent statements. So I used the opportunity to review the homophones, "to, two, and too." She was already familiar with the standard use of too which is to say when there is more than enough of something. In the case of the reading though, I needed to introduce the additive use of two. So since Claire was already good at math I used the example of a math problem. One and two make three, but one and two and two too make five or something along those lines.
When the reading was completed we moved onto the worksheet. The first section was a proper noun identification activity. I feel somewhat embarrassed because I was unsure of the weekdays and months being proper nouns. I am aware of their capitalization but I think I was over-thinking it because a measure of time does not fit the person, place, or thing category neatly. However the rule is that categories of things like the calendar or atlas do count as proper nouns, and there was a section of the extracurricular workbook that included their usage which Jihei located. After the first page which was the last page, Claire insisted on proceeding right to left in the worksheet when there was more English sections in the beginning then at the end. Since the math was easy for her, I couldn't provide as much support as I'd hoped to.
