I met with Melisa and Roberta at Madison social. Their task was to order food off of a menu. They are very nice girls from Brazil. They were shy when ordering and needed help with understanding a lot of the menu. I helped them a little bit by saying the word in Spanish. They could figure out the equivalent word in Portuguese.
We talked about some interesting things. We talked about sororities and fraternities for a while after Melisa asked why a group of girls were dressed in the exact same way in shorts that left little to the imagination. After explaining what a waltz is and some of the things that fraternities and sororities do, they both expressed how stupid all of it sounded. I thought that was hilarious.
We talked about dating in the U.S. and in college as well. I explained that a relatively-new phenomena here in college is to not look for someone to marry but to look for someone that can hold you over until you get your career started and then look for someone to marry. Everyone has plans for themselves and knows that their time in college is only a chunk of time. Between school and our future plans for ourselves we don't want to begin to settle down with someone. Many relationships in college are more physical and less long-term. They thought it was very interesting.
They told us about a trip they were taking the following day to St. George with other CIES students. They were very excited.
