Yesterday I met with my adult tutee Hee-Lee for the second time. She brought a book for us to work out of practicing conversation skills. The book asked a simple question and gave the answerer a formula to answer the question, with an introduction, 1st supporting idea, 2nd supporting idea and a conclusion. Hee-Lee informed me this was a TOEFL book and this was how they would be expected to answer for the TOEFL test. It was an interesting way to have a conversation but at times seemed a little forced or unnatural. I had Hee-Lee ask me the questions first so I could answer and she could get an idea of how she could answer the question when it was her turn . The questions were good and gave us a lot to talk about but I kept on saying things like "and my first support idea would be..." which you would never say in a normal conversation, so by the end I just tried to answer normally, but it was difficult. During the session whenever I used a word that Hee-Lee didn't know or understand she would write it down, which was good practice for her to learn new words and their meaning. When it was her turn to answer Hee-Lee had trouble a couple times trying to think of word to convey her meaning, but I enjoyed working on this with her, so I would help her think of a word and had her write it down and we would talk about it's meaning. I am trying to figure out more activities for us to do in our future sessions, so I've been asking around but really I need to be able to tell someone else what level she is so that I can find level appropriate material. I think she is a low intermediate, maybe a level 3? But I am still not sure.
