Date: 9/24/14
Time: 2:00 pm – 2:50 pm
Teacher: Vicky

The first thing I noticed about this teacher was how kind and enthusiastic she was. Before class started all of her students verbalized how much they enjoyed her class and how she was their favorite teacher. After observing her class I now understand why. She opened the class with the question, “What are you doing after class?” Each student responded with a full sentence with the majority of the answers consisted of “After class I am going to sleep” or “After class I am hanging out with my conversation partner”. Vicky was extremely assertive with her class; her students rarely spoke out of place.
Once they got into the core of the lesson I found it amusing when her students described a minster as being a “boss” of a church. She then went over how by taking off the e and adding a y the word changes to ministry, which is a place a minister works. She gave her students the class prior to read an article on the civil rights movement. This class they held a  discussion and answered questions in pairs. After that she had the students listen to an audio clip to determine the meaning of pacifist based off context clues. This audio clip was played twice. Vicky would write various vocabulary words on the board and then write synonyms and context clues under the vocabulary to help define each word.

When a student was called on to read a question aloud he had difficulty pronouncing the word desegregation, but Vicky gave him confidence and helped him sound out the word. She helped students gain a better understanding for words by breaking down the meaning. For example desegregation was broken into de- then segregation. The class had little difficulty understanding the words once they were broken down. I truly applaud Vicky for her patience, communicative skills, and high energy levels. Her class was enjoyable to observe and I believe she is truly a great teacher.
