TEFL Tutor Session No. 4
Rina's Home
Rina is an adorable five year from South Korea and attends Gilchrist. Apparently her mother told her my name before I arrived because she said that Rina was so excited to learn my name was Anna, the same name as the character in Frozen. We were off to a good start. She has not been in the United States for very long and struggles with some basic aspects of English while other aspects are fairly good. Her mother wanted me to work on reading and writing with her the most. She had an Accelerated Reader book titled, "Merry Christmas, Ollie!" which we read twice and then I asked her comprehension questions because she was going to be quizzed on that book the following day when she took her AR test at school. I also had her write a three sentence summary regarding what the book was about (setting, characters, plot) and then she read it aloud. That activity gave me a good opportunity to practice with her on grammar skills.
After we read the book and she answered some reading questions I transitioned the lesson to grammar. We worked on conjunctions and I wrote out sentences on a small white board, gave her three options to fill-in-the-blank, and then she answered them. The sentences that she did not fill in correctly we went over, practiced which word belonged, gave more examples, and then worked on pronunciation of the words that she struggled with.
Rina was very eager to learn and our session ended up lasting a little over an hour and a half. She was very excited to read, and requested that I bring more books for her on my next visit. We concluded the session when her mother came over and said thank you and goodbye. Rina's sister, Zoe, asked me my favorite Frozen song before I left and before I could finish replying, "Do You Want to Build a Snowman?", Zoe and Rina started belting out the words, in perfect English.
I haven't seen Frozen yet, but apparently I need to cause my niece is the same way; loves all the music from it. That's good that you guys went as long as you did. It seems rare to have a session where your not watching the clock, but its nice to have someone so interested in learning that the time flies by. It seems like you guys covered a lot too! Impressive!
