Harrison TP#6

Wendnesday September, 19

For this tutoring session I again met Youngseo and her mom and dad at the Collins Public Library. This time, her mom had a 90 minute tutoring session of her own, so I had a lot of time to kill. Luckily, I came prepared with snacks and a Disney princess coloring book to break up the session and make it a little more fun for Youngseo.

To start off Youngseo and I worked through a worksheet she was given at school for homework. It consisted of practicing the letters M, A, S, T and P,  writing the letter S, and practicing some sight words such as "the," "can," "like," and "to." Youngseo was able to fly through this worksheet without many problems.

Next, we worked on a phonics book I brought with me. She practiced sounding out some simple pairs for a few minutes until we took a break to color some. While coloring, I would periodically ask her to pass a certain color crayon or ask her what part of the body she was coloring. She was able to respond correctly nearly every time.

Next we tried to read the Dr. Seuss book "Hop on Pop." Unfortunately, I soon realized she was just sighting the words and not sounding them out on her own, so I think we will have to go back to more basic phonics first. It doesn't look like she is being taught phonics at school, so I am a little unsure on how to proceed, since phonics is how I was taught to read. In any case, we had a lot of fun coloring together and she still seems very excited to learn.

  1. Hang in there with phonics. Even if she's not being taught with phonics in school, you can give her a great gift by teaching her phonics.

  2. What phonics book did you use? I would love to try that with my child. I've found she has a little more difficulty with some of the wh words. And the Dr. Seuss books are great for kids! Good choice.
