Yesterday I met with my adult tutee Hee-Lee Kim. She was very nice and we spent the first session getting to know each other and discussing what I can do to help her in the CIES program and with her English. She is a beginning level student here from Korea with her husband, who is working at FSU, and daughter, who is in elementary school. Hee-Lee has very interesting job in Korea, she works for the customs
agency, assigning values to incoming goods and products and because of
her job she has opportunities to travel and work abroad. So if her English improves she has more options and job security. Hee-Lee had learned English in middle and high school but had since stopped
practicing and using it, so she was a little rusty and timid at first
but I could notice an improvement by the end of our session. Hee-Lee felt that her grammar and written English was pretty good so she wanted to work on her speaking and listening skills, specifically with a native speaker. We spent most of our time talking and asking typical first meeting type questions and I could understand her most of the time, but had to ask her to repeat a few words/sentences and resisted the urge to correct her on every little thing. I wanted her to feel like she could open up and not worry about messing up or trying to say something that she might not know how. At our next meeting I plan on writing down some things I notice during our session and give it to her to work on or practice.
