Hecht House
I team-tutored Sephora (Brazil) and Coo (Korea) with Harrison.
Coo told us about a build-a-bike program they heard about in CIES class. Each
student wanted to learn more about how she could get a bicycle.
We all worked together on our laptops to find the BikeHouse.org
website http://bicyclehouse.org/bicycle_house/Build_a_Bike.html, where there
were loads of details and an application to complete and submit. We found the
page about Build-A-Bike, and each student alternated reading aloud the
instructions. After each short paragraph, we did a comprehension check: Sephora
or Coo explained what she had read.
I worked one-on-one with Coo during the remainder of the
session. First, we completed the online application. One of the questions was
"tell us a little about yourself," so I chatted with Coo to help her to
create three short sentences, including stating how she would rather build than
buy a bike to ride in Tallahassee.
When Coo answered the question about the kind of riding she did
… with a little help ... Coo typed the word commuter. Impressive!
Coo and Seporah discussed how to answer the question about when
they are available to build their bikes, as they have busy schedules and hope
to go together to the BicycleHouse. It’s on Jackson Bluff Road, one block south
of the stadium.
Coo was concerned about the money involved, which is a “donation.”
She wanted to ensure the appropriate amount of donation. We dug deeper into the
website and found a fee schedule for private customers who have repairs done at
the BicycleHouse. Then we discussed how to use the fee schedule to determine an
appropriate donation.
After the forms were submitted, we talked about bicycles, styles
of bicycles and riding gear -- including helmets and padded spandex shorts. We
went online to look at pictures to learn vocabulary words, which Coo asked me
to spell so she could type them into her phone.
The students had heard that "biking" meant
motorcycling. We discussed the nuances of bicycling, biking, cycling and
motorcycling. We all laughed about how confusing it is!
Impressive indeed!
