Taylor TP #4

TP #4

PJ's House

My third tutoring session with PJ was a little different.  His mother showed me some reading homework that his teacher had returned an asked PJ to re-do because he had missed a lot of the comprehension questions. It was difficult to get hi to focus, he was bored because he had already done this homework. It was two reading passages with comprehension questions and a short answer question that asked him to compare the two stories. By the second story he didn't want to read anymore. The story was about camels in the desert. Last summer I went to Morocco and took a three day trip through the desert on camel back. I showed him a few pictures from my trip and tried to talk about them with him in relation to the passage. This seemed to get his attention and he was much more interested to keep reading once he had seen actual photographs of the camels.

Since it can be difficult to keep young kids on track, I think pictures that relate to the story is a great way to get them interested in their assignments that they may find boring.

The writing portion of the homework was challenging for him, but with a little guidance he was able to answer the question. He made a few grammar errors, but he easily corrected them when I asked him to go back and look at his mistakes. All in all, I think he had a much better understanding of the homework after doing it a second time.
