Last Wednesday I again met with my child tutee Youngseo at the Collins Library downtown. After I found Youngseo and her mother, I sat down with her to begin our tutoring session. The first thing we did was go over some homework and papers that her kindergarten teacher had sent home with her. The paper included a few sight words to practice such as "the" and "an" as well as three letters (m, a, and s) to practice writing and pronouncing. We worked on these until Youngseo could read, write, and say them without any help from me.
After we had practiced with the worksheet for a little bit, we decided to go find a couple of books in the stacks. We searched for a little bit and found a book about a zoo and another book about some drumming monkeys. Youngseo was able to identify various animals and colors while also recognizing a lot of words. I made sure to give extra attention to the sight words we practiced earlier. She picked them up extremely quickly and was also able to pick up some other new words.
For our next session I've dug out some old phonics and Dr. Seuss books I had as a kid. I also think I'm going to grab a few coloring books so we can have something fun to do instead of just reading the entire time.

It is so great you are helping her with here work at school. I can imagine this is helping with her confidence as well. Is there an ESL program at her school?
