Today I tutored my child tutee David. We finished reading the Book Rex we started 3 weeks ago. Over the course of the past couple weeks David's comprehension skills have increased. During our first session it was difficult for him to summarize chapters we read together without looking back at the book. Today we was able to summarize about 90% of the material we read without looking back at the book. The other 10% he summarized he looked back at the book to double check the spelling of certain words and the names of certain characters. It is difficult to keep his attention for a full hour. After about 30 minutes in you can see his eyes to start to start to wander and he becomes more fidgety. Some effective methods I used to retain his attention included, using different voices for each of the character's dialogue, and asking him questions about what he interpreted about the pictures and what he thought would happen next. These methods seem to make our tutoring session more engaging for him. We also spent some time going over math word problems. I deconstruction the problems by associating meanings of keywords like difference, sum, total, etc. and replacing them with a subtraction, addition, multiplication and equal signs. David has improved his understanding in these types of math problems, yet still needs some more practice on them before he completely mastered it. All in all today was a very productive session.
