I observed Gale's tutoring session with Andressa on Thursday.  Andressa is a 21 year old foundations student from Brazil. She moved to the United States right before the Fall semester started and has never studied English. I was very impressed by her listening and speaking abilities. Gale had her read a short article about the seasons changing. It was an extensive reading assignment, her vocabulary is very good, so she knew most of the words. When she encountered a word she could not pronounce or didn't understand, Gale would break down each syllable to help her understand. Her patience is amazing. When she was done reading the article we discussed it, I was very impressed with how well she understood the main idea of the text.
Next we all played a card game that is a variation of scrabble. Each player has six cards each with a different letter. In the center there are four cards that spell GAME. On each turn you replace a letter in the center word to make a new word. This game was great for beginners because it introduces new vocabulary as well as repeating old vocabulary, there were a few words that kept reappearing which helped solidify them in her vocabulary.
Over all it was a great tutoring session, Andressa had a good list of new words to practice. Card games are a great idea to keep tutoring sessions fun when everyone has had a long day.
