Sore and Jihun arrived punctually and ready to work. We chatted a bit about how they use Facebook. I learned they both post photos/videos, but neither has posted anything about their three weeks at CIES. Perfect for the lesson I planned!

First we watched a video on the CIES website (about student services) that neither student had seen. We chatted a bit about the video (listening/speaking practice).

I explained that today each student would write a short script about their first three weeks at CIES and read it on camera. I would record the student on my iPad, and I would email the video to each student so they can post it on Facebook (if they desire).

We enjoyed some pre-writing discussion to plan scripts. I helped each student with vocabulary and grammar they wanted to use to write their scripts. They wrote as I observed for about 10 minutes.

Each student read his/her script aloud. I corrected some grammar and pronunciation. Each student edited/revised scripts for a few minutes. Then I recorded each student reading his/her script. We reviewed the videos, and I asked each student what s/he learned (WILT).

Jihun said he learned to use the word "immerse" and discovered he needs to work on grammar. He explained that the only English grammar he has been taught was taught to him in the Korean language. He requested me to explain gerund/infinitive, which I did. I suggested he ask Ms. Turk to recommend a good English grammar handbook.

Sore, who struggles with listening and speaking, was happy she now correctly pronounces "study" in several forms. Her reading/writing is better than her speaking, so allowing her to write and read her script helped her to create a video she is proud to share.
