Tutee's Residence

This was my second session with my child tutee, Claire. Normally we would have met on Monday but they had an open house at her elementary school that day. From here on, it may be more efficient to hold two of my tutoring sessions on Fridays instead of spreading them among the week.

We began the lesson by checking and correcting Claire's homework for the weekend. Her mother was unsure of the vowel length in axe, but I assured her it was a short sound with the two rules we had learned in class the other day. Specifically, the guardian consonant and the silent e. We moved on to the rest of the assignments which involved writing single sentences of opinion. I was confused at first because part of the sentence had been written which could result in a simple closure like "I think swimming + is fun." However, there was another line below to extend the sentence so we thought up ways to extend the sentence into something more descriptive.

I was trying to spread our time across several activities so we quickly began working through the 1st grade workbook. Claire did not have any trouble with the sequence numbering of the stories or addition but when she was supposed to write out the descriptive sentences I started using a bottom up approach for linguistic support. I gave her several options for conjugation, time tense, and pronoun use when preparing a sentence about a girl who was happy to see her grandparents.

When we had finished that page we segued into some reading to wrap up the lesson. She brought a book about the eyes of the animal kingdom. Besides helping her with the phonemes of pronunciation, I tried to formulate some kind of question as a comprehension check at the end of a page. For example, relating the "hundreds of millions of years" phrase to the primary adjective for grandparents which was "old." This digressed into a short discussion about Fossils, and my love of finding them as a child which seemed to peak her interest. And then it seemed our time was over before it had barely begun.

  1. I think that it's great that you added a comprehension element into your session!
