In this tutoring session I prepared a number of pictures for Jun to see and describe to me. This proved difficult for Jun to do. There were many breaks and pauses and many times I wanted Jun to elaborate. I wasn't sure how to have him do that without pointing out too much. He tended to use very short sentences with simple answers. His vocabulary was definitely lacking.
We went over the pictures, such as a woman in a hammock with a puppy on her lap. I asked him questions to facilitate his speaking when he got stuck, which was frequently. The first picture was of a cowboy lassoing cattle in the middle of a busy city. The second was of a leopard in a tree. With these two pictures I tried asking him what he thought was going on, if anything seemed strange, etc. It took him a while to explain why a cowboy in a city was strange. I'm not sure how I can facilitate him talking more and putting sentences together more quickly.
Try to pose questions that are a bit descriptive to the story or pictures, such as, What is he doing? What is he wearing? What do you call those things on a leopard? This is building vocabulary first. Then you can move on to more opinion questions.
