On August 27th I had my first tutoring session ever. It was with PJ an 8 year old Korean-American boy. We went over some homework that he had from the week before and homework that was due the next day. PJ has a bit of trouble with reading comprehension, he can read perfectly fine without stuttering but he doesn't understand what the sentence tries to convey.
On that Wednesday we went over his homework that was due the next morning, it was a reading comprehension assignment. I asked him to read each paragraph aloud and then to re-read to himself to tell me what is happening in that story. After reading the entire story I asked him to give me a summary of what happened in the story. Afterwords we worked together to answer the reading comprehension questions. If he got stuck on one we would go back to the paragraph with the answer in it and would re-read it and discuss it until he figured out the answer.
The next assignment we worked on was an interview worksheet. He asked me questions from the worksheet and I would answer them, he would then write down what my answers were. PJ took this assignment in stride it was very easy for him. PJ only had a bit of trouble with spelling, not with any grammar.
Overall I enjoyed working with PJ and I look forward to having further tutoring sessions with him.
