Vocabulary
I met with HeeLee on Thursday and she had one more final to take in her reading class. She said the test would be on all the vocabulary lists that she had been given so she wanted to go over them with me and had me explain some words/terms that she had highlighted and was having trouble with. This was a good exercise for us to practice some real life situations that these words might be used in. It forced me to think on the spot of some situations because sometimes you know the word's meaning, but it is hard to explain it to someone else with out using it in context. A few of the vocab was phrases like: "run up the bill" and so I had to help HeeLee imagine being at a fancy restaurant and we kept ordering food and drinks, and more food and more drinks, until eventually with out thinking we had, we "ran up our bill" to be a lot more money then we had expected to. A couple of times multiple words would be about similar topics so I was able to use another word to help explain a new word. I am impressed with a lot of HeeLee's work from her classes. She takes lots of notes and writes down little clues on her vocabulary worksheets to help her remember what certain words are. I have tried to keep an error log with HeeLee but she is very proficient and is usually already writing down some things that I am saying so I usually have her write down the words that she is having trouble with and we discuss it and she keeps her own record of words that she is trying to understand better. We went over all her vocabulary words and she knew most of them already, but I think we prepared her enough to take her final, so I hope she did well on it. We are planning on meeting again this week and I will find out her results.
