Class Observation #3
Jerry's Listening class
Group 2
On Tuesday I observed Pirya Jerry's Group 2 listening class. When I signed up to observe her class I didn't recognize her name, but when I walked in I realized we knew each other! I taught swim lessons to her daughter, Rosita, this summer. She started the class with teacher evaluations so it took a little while to get to the lesson. They were reviewing for their exam which included a discussion about note taking strategies when listening to a lecture. This was a helpful review for me and something I would definitely want to teach my listening students.
When listening to a lecture the first time it is important to listen for the main idea and pay special attention to markers, words like first and in addition to, as well as transition words like but and however. Words like this can indicate a transition between main ideas. The second time you here the lecture you need to listen for the details about each main idea.
After reviewing note taking strategies, she had them listen to a four minute audio and take notes. Then they had to answer questions about what they had heard to make sure their notes were focused on the main idea, but also detailed enough. This was to practice what they would have to do on their final exam.
I enjoyed her class and her teaching style which was very efficient.
