PJ's House
Last weekend I had a tutoring session with PJ. I recently visited home and found a few books that I used to love as a kid and thought PJ might enjoy them too. We read Verdi which is a book about a young snake. The best part about this book is the pictures, there were also some great new vocabulary words for him to learn. When he finished reading the book, we talked about snakes for awhile and I checked his comprehension of the story. I also brought the comic book, Calvin and Hobbes. The reading and vocabulary were level appropriate, but it didn't seem like he was understanding the story. I think the problem here was schema. Many of the comic strips are based on the imagination of Calvin, who is six years old. I think it was difficult for PJ to understand that Hobbes, Calvin's stuffed tiger, was only alive in Calvin's imagination. PJ likes to play soccer, so the comic strips where Calvin and Hobbes play soccer were his favorite.
