Sushila TP #13

TP # 13
Date: 10/2/14
Time: 8:15-9 am
Location: CIES bldg.

Our session usually would start at 8 am but he overslept and was a little late. He felt extremely bad and apologetic for being late. It was not a big deal because I had an extra 15 minutes to drink a cup of coffee and organize the materials I needed, so I viewed his tardiness as a positive thing. The first part of our session, we reviewed the 2 short videos we went over in our previous session. I asked him questions we discussed in the week before. The week prior I would word the questions in a context that would help him figure out the answer. This week I would ask him more difficult questions like describe what the author meant when he stated, “inviting a struggle” or “embracing a hustle”, etc. They I gave him 5 vocabulary words from each video we went over the week before from each video and ask him to either define them or give 2-3 synonyms for each word. After I evaluated his comprehension of each video I felt confident that he understood each videos’ context. If I were to have given him a grade based on the comprehension questions and vocabulary we covered I would give him a 85% but he put a lot of effort in understanding and was fully engaged the entire time of our session, so that would sway me to give him a 90%. Once we finished this I asked him to describe me his hopes, desires, and dreams. Before he was able to tell me these things, we went over the definition of hope, desire, and dreams. We discussed their similarities and differences. He was only able to tell me one thing, before we ran out of time, that he classified in each category of hopes, dreams, and desires; that to become a fluent English speaker. Jihun is definitely the most actively engaged student I have tutored thus far. He puts a great deal of effort into learning English and I know with more practice, he will achieve his goal of becoming fluent in English. For those of you proceeding onto the 200 hour course Jihun would be a great student to tutor.
