Tutoring Session No. 13
Rina's House

Rina is always a pleasure to tutor. The previous week, she requested that I bring a set of worksheets so I made sure to do it. She really enjoys working on the worksheets and also using the whiteboard to write down the answers. She is a very proactive learner. For example, any time we are reviewing a story or if I am giving her a word bank with definitions or sentences, she always wishes to use the whiteboard to write down her answers. It works for me because it keeps her on task and interested which can be difficult when she starts to struggle with certain activities. When this happens, I notice that she starts to fidget and lose focus. It's important for me to get her mind redirected to the material we are going over. I chose a variety of worksheets for her. Once again they all had to deal with Halloween since the holiday is right around the corner. The first worksheet had to do with singular and plural words. For example, there were pictures of different Halloween creatures (i.e., witches, ghosts, bats, pumpkins, and haunted houses) and she had to choose which word was the correct plural spelling. The only word she missed was "witches" (she chose "witchs") and I told her the reason there needs to be an "e" between the final consonant and the "s" to make the word plural. Another worksheet involved determining whether a sentence was a question or a statement. Rina had very little trouble with this exercise. The rest of the worksheets were vocabulary and grammar. She completed them all with about 80% accuracy. We went over the correct answers together to ensure she understood what she did correctly and also where her mistakes were.
