Tutoring Session No. 14
Rina’s House
For this tutoring session
I brought along another set of worksheets, this time on my computer, for Rina
to work on. I pulled up the worksheets on my computer for her to see and she
used her white board to write down the answers. The worksheets were at a second
grade level (slightly about her level – not too much but enough to challenge
her) and once again had to do with Halloween. Although using worksheets may
seem repetitive, I have noticed that Rina responds very well to them and keeps
her well occupied throughout the tutoring session. She also requests them…a lot
of them…so I make it a point to provide them for her. This session I brought
four for her to complete. The first worksheet involved rhyming words that had
to do with Halloween. To accommodate for her proficiency level I had Rina only
find words that rhymed with the key words in the phrase. For example, she was
supposed to read the sentence and look at the context to figure out the answer.
I tried to get her to complete it this way but she was not able to do so. In
that case, I simply had her rhyme (i.e., A witch’s pet that rhymes with rat”
and the answer in this case would be “cat”). This worksheet entailed fourteen
rhymes that she had to complete. She did them all very well and only
needed a little bit of assistance from
me. The second worksheet was reading comprehension about trick-or-treating. She
read the passage and then answered the questions at the end. There was also a
vocabulary component. The third and fourth worksheets involved making words out
of other words. For example, what words can be constructed from HAUNTED HOUSE
and JACK-O-LANTERN. This activity was a little more difficult, but each
worksheet gave clues which helped her out a lot.
