Met with my child tutee on Wednesday 10/8.
This week I wasn't as prepared as usual with my tutee. I usually go online and print out a lot of free little worksheets and such- sometimes I'll even prepare an audio book, but today I nipped out to Books A Million and purchased a couple of new books to read right before our session. I had to work up until 1 hour before my tutoring session so I didn't have much time. I picked up a pop-up book about Frankenstein and a book by Lemony Snicket called "The Dark." The Snicket book was cute, but the pop-up book was comic book style and a little hard to read so we ended up creating a story to match the cool pop-ups.
Needless to say, this was we were focused on reading comprehension. My tutee and I took turns reading the book pages aloud and I stopped every few pages to ask questions about the text. The further we went, I asked her the same questions about previous text plus new questions about the text just read. By the end, she knew the story well.
I was surprised that my tutee (5 years old) sat still so long. Usually she is in her chair but reaching for things and fidgeting a little, but today she was still and very involved in the reading.
