Tutoring Session No. 15
Atomic Coffee - West Call Street
All of the students that I
normally tutor and have as conversation partners will be taking their TOEFL
exam this Friday. They all requested a study session where we practiced
TOEFL-like questions that could appear on the test. Nina, Andressa, Gabi, and Igor
all attended the session at Atomic Coffee. Marissa and Taylor were both there
to observe and even helped me out explaining some more challenging concepts.
Taylor had great insight with her Spanish knowledge as well as Marissa who
knows Portuguese. Two of the students had their TOEFL practice workbooks so we
used those for the session. The students were paired up by level. The two more
advanced students were paired up and the two students who were not as advanced
were paired up together. This enabled them to help each other out during the
practice questions. I potential consequence of pairing the students with one
advanced and one not as advanced could have been that the advanced student
would simply answer the question before the other had a chance to try. I timed
them based on the time allotted in the actual TOEFL exam. They practiced
listening, grammar, and written practice and vocabulary. Some of the questions
were actually pretty challenging and required a good bit of academic language.
They all did very well, though, considering the difficulty level of the
questions. We went over each of the questions together as a group and I asked
each pair of students to give their answer. If it was wrong, we talked about
why, and also went over any words in the questions that they did not quite
understand. We spent about an hour on the TOEFL workbook practicing problems. They
informed me that while they were nervous about the exam, they were going to be
studying a lot this week.
