Chile's on FSU Campus

This conversation partner meeting was a really enjoyable one! Andressa, my tutee Nina, and myself went to the Chile's on campus for dinner Tuesday after I observed Marissa's great tutoring session with them. We spent almost two hours talking about differences between the United States and Brazil, mainly the differences in prices in Brazil compared to here. Basically, things are much more expensive there.

One of the first things I noticed was when the waitress asked what we wanted to drink. In Brazil it isn't always customary to order a drink when you sit down at a restaurant like in the United States where you order a water even if you don't feel like having anything to drink. After we ordered food we got talking about their time here in the United States so far and how their classes are going at CIES. We talked about holidays, including Thanksgiving, and I proceeded to invite them both to Thanksgiving at my parent's house in Fort Myers. They were beyond excited - much more excited than I thought they would be. Before Andressa came to the United States she said she watched lots of videos about different aspects of American culture, so she was especially excited. They asked me lots of questions about different aspects of American culture like the government, how voting here works, getting a driver's license, and a plethora of other topics that deal with being in America.

Altogether it was a really fin evening and I learned a lot about their culture and was able to help them practice their English speaking skills while also learning valuable information about American life.
