Tutoring Blog #10
9/30/14
I met with Andressa and Nina for the first time. Both students are from Brazil. They have been meeting with Gale and - I believe - a few other individuals for tutoring and conversations. I had e-mailed them asking what specifically they needed help with, but did not hear back from them before the session. Gale mentioned they had played a card game the week before for vocabulary and sentence construction. Building off of one of my lesson plans she thought that the students might enjoy a discussion about Halloween, so that was our topic.
Honestly, I had only heard back from Andressa about the tutoring so I did not know that Nina would be joining us until we met. I was fine with that, but I am glad that the first session was a little more informal because I would not have had materials. Good to know that taking extra be something I need to do regularly in case any others show up.
When they arrived I asked if there was anything specific they wanted to focus on. They both said prepositions and vocabulary. Since I didn't already have anything prepared for this lesson, we went with the Halloween party. They said they would actually like to have one in a few weeks. However, this seemed a little too easy of a task for them. Both students are fairly advanced in their English speaking. The next session I have a few other ideas of games with vocabulary words we can use and one possible game that could incorporate prepositions and other forms of grammar.
