I meet with Jihun on Thursday morning. I observed a class,
early that week, which he was in. From my observation I noticed that his
listening skills were sufficient enough to understand slightly more advance
material than my other tutees. My best friend is a photojournalist and I found
2 short video clips from her blog to use as material for our session. The first
was on “being American” and the second was on “take the long way home”. Both of these videos narrate abstract ideas
with a more complex sentence structure. They also contain higher levels of
vocabulary.
The 2 clips were only about 2
minutes long. The first time we listened to each video we listening to them all
the way through. The second time we listened to the video we would pause it
about every 20 seconds and discussed the meaning of what we heard. Yes this was difficult at first for him to
understand. After we played it the first time he stated that it was very fast.
The following times we listened to the videos he understood about 60-70% more
their content. These 2 videos were very short; however, we went into great
detail in describing their meaning.
At the end of the session, Jihun told
me that expanded his vocabulary by learning a lot of new words and how certain
words, he has been familiar with before, have various meanings depending on
their usage. This material required a great deal of concentration in order to
understand the context. I do not think he was very familiar with this level of
concentration that was required. However, I think it was good for him to learn
and improve his skills by experiencing some difficulty. The material was
slightly above his skill level. I purposely chose this material to challenge
him. I knew he would be capable of understanding it with time and explanation.
I could tell he understood the video’s content through my discussion questions.
Nonetheless, it took an entire hour for him to gain a full understanding of 2
short clips. Even thought he learnt a lot in our session it might not have been
very time efficient in a classroom setting with more than one student. Here’s a
link to the videos if anyone would like to watch them.
